As a gardener, summer border flowers bring me enormous pleasure, and as a Botanical Artist, an infinite choice of subjects from which to paint. Since I follow the English style of gardening in my planting, I echo this classic feel in my formal plant portraits.

The roses, iris, honeysuckle and fuchsias were private commissions. The pinks were exhibited in Lincoln cathedral in a show on Flowers in Religion, organised by students of Anne-Marie Evans in 2007. The ‘unnamed’ blue Tall Bearded Iris from an old iris collection at Goodnestone Park Gardens, was a preparation study for an iris course I held there, to paint these plants.

The English Garden Favourites gallery has many summer-flowering favourites chosen by Alexis Datta, former Head Gardener at Sissinghurst Castle Garden. These include roses, asters, a dahlia, a fuchsia, and a wallflower. The brilliance of their palette is a wonderful challenge to an artist and the collection shows off the colour, texture and form of English gardens plants.
